  • The initiative brings schools and local convenience retailers together to promote healthier eating.
  • Supported by more than 2,300 retailers across Scotland, the programme is funded by the Scottish Government.

The SGF Healthy Living Programme (HLP) has marked a major milestone, having now provided a healthy breakfast to more than 48,000 schoolchildren through its Welby Breakfast initiative.

The events, which are delivered in partnership with local convenience retailers, aim to encourage children to develop healthier eating habits and strengthen connections between schools and their local shops. Pupils enjoy a nutritious breakfast while also learning about the importance of making balanced food choices.

The milestone comes as the new school year begins, with the HLP team calling it “a testament to the collective hard work and dedication of everyone involved” and thanking the “amazing wholesalers and retailers” supporting the programme across Scotland.

Retailers taking part supply food, compostable cutlery and tableware, and use the occasion to highlight healthier options available in-store. For many stores, the events also act as a platform to boost community engagement and underline the role convenience retailers play in supporting local wellbeing.

Funded by the Scottish Government and administered by the Scottish Grocers’ Federation (SGF), the Healthy Living Programme has grown to include more than 2,300 retailers across Scotland. Its wider goal is to increase the range, quality, availability and affordability of fresh produce and healthier products within the convenience channel.

The HLP team said they are already planning the next Welby Breakfast event and are looking forward to building on the success achieved so far.
