Typhoo is bringing back its Gnu advertising character after 50 years, with a new national campaign set to launch in November.

Supreme, which owns the heritage tea brand, is reintroducing the character as Drew the Gnu in a campaign titled “Typhoo Tea Fixes Everything... Sort Of”. The campaign will use humour and everyday situations to reconnect with existing consumers and introduce the brand to a new generation.

The revival marks a return to one of the UK tea market’s recognisable advertising characters, which first appeared on British television 50 years ago.

Supreme said the campaign forms part of its ongoing efforts to develop Typhoo, drawing on the brand’s 120-year heritage while strengthening consumer engagement in the UK tea market.

Drew the Gnu features a contemporary take on the original character, providing a platform for future brand storytelling that combines Typhoo’s advertising heritage with its current identity and ambitions.

Sandy Chadha, chief executive of Supreme, said: “Bringing back the Gnu gives us the opportunity to celebrate an iconic part of Typhoo’s heritage while giving the character a fresh personality and a new role for today’s consumers.

“Drew provides an ideal marketing platform for us to continue to extend Typhoo’s market reach and bring this legacy British brand to a new audience.”
