Retail technology provider Solum has partnered with food waste reduction specialist Gander to help grocery retailers automate markdowns on short-dated products and improve in-store efficiency.

The strategic tie-up combines Gander’s expiry-based pricing intelligence with Solum’s Newton electronic shelf labels (ESLs) and Aims SaaS platform, enabling retailers to apply accurate, real-time pricing updates directly at the shelf edge.

The move comes as UK retailers face mounting pressure to meet sustainability targets while protecting margins and managing limited store resources. By linking expiry-led pricing decisions with live shelf-edge updates, the integrated solution aims to reduce manual interventions, improve compliance and free up staff time.

The combined offer will be showcased at the Retail Technology Show 2026, where both companies will demonstrate how expiry-driven pricing and real-time shelf updates can be embedded into everyday store operations.

Gander’s technology identifies short-dated products and applies rule-based markdowns based on retailer-defined parameters. It also provides visibility on waste performance, compliance and sell-through, while promoting reduced-to-clear items across multiple consumer channels to drive demand.

Integrated with Solum’s Newton ESL platform, these pricing decisions are automatically synchronised and displayed on shelf labels in real time. Built on the Newton protocol, the system ensures consistent communication between central pricing systems and store shelves, reducing errors and improving execution across multiple locations.

The partners said the solution creates a connected workflow linking centralised pricing, expiry intelligence and shelf-edge execution, helping retailers transition away from labour-intensive markdown processes towards a more scalable, data-led approach.

“Through our partnership with Solum, grocery retailers can turn every markdown decision into instant, accurate shelf-edge execution,” Stacey Williams, Gander business development director, said. “By combining Gander’s real-time optimisation and demand activation with Solum’s ESL infrastructure, retailers improve sell-through, protect margin, and reduce food waste, all without adding operational complexity in store.”

Mark Duckworth, country manager UK & Ireland at Solum, added: “As increasing numbers of large UK grocery retailers adopt Solum’s ESL solutions based on proven quality and trust, open collaboration with ecosystem partners like Gander represents an important step forward. Through these partnerships, we can deliver sustainability-driven solutions that genuinely reflect the evolving needs of both the market and our customers.”
