Evri has launched Europe’s first trial of a two-legged autonomous delivery robot, with the technology being tested in Barnsley as the parcel company explores how robotics could support couriers and improve last-mile delivery.
Developed in partnership with Japan-based Refined Robotics, the robot has been designed specifically for outdoor parcel deliveries and can carry packages weighing up to 15kg and travel at speeds of up to 6km/h.
The trial is taking place in Barnsley, the UK's first government-backed Tech Town, and will assess how the technology performs in real residential environments.
Unlike some autonomous delivery technologies, the two-legged robot is designed to handle obstacles found in everyday delivery routes. It can climb stairs, navigate uneven surfaces and enter and exit delivery vans, according to Evri.
It can operate autonomously or be remotely monitored and is capable of both attended and unattended deliveries.
Evri said the trial will explore whether the technology can complement its existing delivery network and support operational efficiency, while maintaining customer service levels.
Marcus Hunter, chief technology officer at Evri Group, said the company was focused on giving customers greater choice and control over how they receive parcels.
“Launching Europe's first trial of a two-legged delivery robot in Barnsley is an exciting milestone,” he said.
“Our couriers remain at the heart of our business. We’re committed to exploring how innovation can support them, improve operational efficiency and help us continue offering customers even more choice, convenience and control in the future.”
The trial also builds on Evri's existing presence in retail, with its network of more than 13,000 ParcelShops and Lockers providing consumers with alternatives to home delivery for sending, receiving and returning parcels.
Evri expands US cross-border operation
Separately, Evri Group has agreed to acquire US-based Cross Border Connect (CBC) as it looks to strengthen its international delivery and returns capabilities.
Based in Boca Raton, Florida, CBC provides cross-border logistics technology for international merchants entering the US market, covering delivery, returns and value recovery.
Its platform incorporates six US ports of entry, customs clearance capabilities and a network of logistics partners, with Evri saying the deal will create further opportunities on trade lanes between the UK, Europe and the US.
Financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
