Young people are being warned to stay alert and away from illicit vapes after Durham police seized vape liquids thought to contain fentanyl.

The warning follows growing reports in County Durham relating to Mazza vapes and vape liquids. Mazza is the street term for a type of liquid containing unregulated nicotine or cannabis products.

Concerns escalated over the Bank Holiday weekend following unconfirmed reports that several young people in the Seaham area had been taken to hospital after using the products.

In response, Durham Police seized a number of suspected Mazza vapes and vape liquids and carried out laboratory testing.

Although no traces of fentanyl or any other illegal substances were found, the force has advised people to "be cautious of vapes of unknown origin" and for parents to have "frank conversations" with young people about the dangers of smoking them.

Durham Police said it was aware of "community concerns" regarding the use of illicit Mazza vapes over recent days, particularly in the east of the county and among young people.

So far, its inquiries found that "none of the substances we've tested, including those that have been handed in to us, have contained fentanyl.

"No medical tests from injured parties have yet shown any traces of fentanyl," the force said.

Industry bodies have repeatedly warned that illegal vape products not only undermine legitimate retailers but also pose significant health and safety risks due to their unknown ingredients and lack of regulatory oversight.

Retailers are being encouraged to source products only through reputable suppliers and remain alert to suspicious products claiming to contain substances such as THC or other controlled compounds.
