The UK has formally crossed the £2‑per‑litre diesel threshold, signalling what FairFuelUK describes as the onset of a national fuel emergency.
Diesel, the essential fuel underpinning haulage, farming and supply chains, is now both prohibitively expensive and at risk of rationing — leaving Britain potentially weeks from significant economic and logistical disruption.
According to FairFuelUK, successive governments — including the current Labour administration — have sleepwalked the UK into a fuel security crisis by disregarding years of evidence about declining refinery capacity, shrinking national reserves and rising reliance on foreign diesel.
And now the truth is out: Britain has barely 40–42 days of diesel left. The EU has months. The US is threatening a diesel export ban. And the UK is begging Brussels for help.
Howard Cox, Founder of FairFuelUK, says: “We are perilously close to a full‑blown economic fuel crisis. Britain has some of the lowest diesel reserves in Europe, yet the Government refuses to act. If supply tightens again, the consequences for hauliers, farmers and families will be devastating.”
In a humiliating twist, Britain has been forced to go cap‑in‑hand to the EU for emergency diesel supplies after the United States threatened to ban diesel exports.
Officials have scrambled into crisis talks with Germany, France, Italy, Ireland and the European Commission — desperate to access Europe’s 315 million‑barrel emergency diesel stockpile.
The UK, meanwhile, has no meaningful strategic diesel reserve. One decision in Washington could leave Britain stranded within days.
Howard Cox, Founder of FairFuelUK, says: “It is shameful that Britain is now begging the EU for diesel. One move by the US and our economy is on its knees. This is what decades of political complacency have done.”
IS RATIONING NEXT?
With reserves collapsing, imports threatened and prices exploding, FairFuelUK warns that fuel rationing is no longer unthinkable. Hauliers, farmers, tradespeople and supply chains are already sounding the alarm. Whitehall insiders admit privately that contingency plans are being dusted off. Britain is closer to rationing today than at any point in modern history.
TODAY’S DIESEL PRICE SHOCKER
- UK average: £2.01
- Supermarkets: £1.94
- Branded forecourts: £2.05
- Motorways: £2.23
EU VS UK: THE BRUTAL REALITY
- UK diesel cover: 40–42 days
- EU emergency diesel/gasoil: 315 million barrels
- EU consumption cover: ≈ 80 days
- France & Germany: reported to hold 200+ days
- UK: forced to rely on imports for half its diesel, including a third from the US
Howard Cox says: “The gap is staggering — and dangerous. Britain is in this perilous position because years of ideological energy policies ignored diesel security, slashed refining capacity, and left us exposed. These choices have pushed the UK to the brink of a fuel crisis while Europe sits on months of reserves.”
Britain’s diesel is among the most heavily taxed in the world, with Fuel Duty and VAT piling pressure on drivers and businesses. More than 40 countries have cut taxes or capped prices. Britain has done nothing.
