Eco-cleaning household brand touches new milestone in refill initiative

Bio-D refill containers for reuse in closed loop scheme

  • Reaching a milestone 20,000 returns, Bio-D consumers have returned twice as many containers in the past year as they have over the previous three years combined

In just one year, eco-cleaning product manufacturer Bio-D has more than doubled the number of 20 litre product refill containers returned as part of its ‘No Brainer Container’ closed loop laundering initiative.

Celebrating over 21,097 containers being returned and relaundered ready to be refilled and reused, the number of customers, consumers and partners returning their empty containers has skyrocketed over the past year - returning twice as many containers in the past year as the previous three years combined.

The scheme, which encourages customers and suppliers to return their empty 20 litre refill containers for cleaning and reuse, has now saved over 20 tonnes of plastic from landfill, reducing the equivalent CO2 emissions as more than 2,700 trees would absorb in a year.

Lloyd Atkin, managing director at Bio-D, said, “To double our closed loop returns in just over a year is a phenomenal achievement. It shows how committed our customers and partners are to reducing waste and how quickly positive change can scale when systems are easy and accessible.

"This milestone proves that sustainability doesn’t have to be difficult. It just needs the right approach and a community willing to get involved.”

First launching its ‘No Brainer Container’ scheme in 2021, Bio-D’s closed loop initiative dramatically reduces the amount of plastic used within the company. Initially introduced in collaboration with select wholesalers, it has now been rolled out to all UK consumers, who can return as few as two at a time.

Heather Nixon, sustainability, NPD and regulatory manager at Bio-D, added: “It’s one of those processes where every hand matters. The team’s attention to detail - from ensuring labels are intact to making sure every container is clean and safe - is what allows us to offer a circular system we’re genuinely proud of.

“Despite seeing other similar schemes being discontinued due to practical and financial issues, we’re pleased to see our time and investment has resulted in real success. This success can also be attributed to a growing awareness of the environmental benefits of the initiative from our dedicated eco-consumers.”

As well as receiving a King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development in 2024, Bio-D also secured its B Corp recertification in June 2025, significantly increasing its score and positioning Bio-D in the ranks of ‘outstanding’ performers on the B Corp scale.
