Aldi is partnering with Deliveroo to offer on-demand grocery delivery across the UK, with a trial of the service set to begin at eight stores next month.
The discount supermarket said the partnership will allow customers to order around 2,000 Aldi products through the Deliveroo app, including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy, bread, household essentials and Specialbuys.
The trial will begin on Tuesday 6 October, with a nationwide rollout currently planned for early 2027.
The move marks a return to Deliveroo for Aldi. The supermarket first launched a Deliveroo trial in May 2020, during the first UK Covid-19 lockdown, and significantly expanded it later that year. The trial was extended into 2021 before Aldi ended the partnership in January 2022, as coronavirus restrictions eased and shoppers returned to stores.
The announcement comes as Aldi continues to expand its UK logistics capacity, with its £500 million Bardon Distribution Centre in Leicestershire recently beginning to handle fresh produce, including fruit and vegetables, as the automated site moves into its next phase of operation.
In the latest trial, customers will be able to place orders for on-demand delivery or select a delivery window, with Deliveroo Riders picking and packing orders directly from Aldi stores before delivering them to customers.
Aldi said the model will allow its store colleagues to focus on running stores and serving customers, while Deliveroo handles the picking and delivery of online orders.
The retailer said its products on the Deliveroo app will be priced lower than any other supermarket offering rapid delivery.
Aldi said the partnership is modelled on its existing arrangements with Deliveroo parent company DoorDash in the US and Australia, where the model has proved popular.
The service will also be the only rapid delivery service currently available from a discount supermarket in the UK, according to Aldi.
Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK, said the partnership would allow the retailer to bring its low prices to more customers “without changing how our stores operate”.
He added: “The DoorDash model has been incredibly popular with Aldi customers in Australia and the United States, and we know from our previous trial there is clear demand for more affordable groceries on a rapid delivery platform in the UK.”
The partnership will also form part of Deliveroo's new Shop & Deliver service. The company said participation in Shop & Deliver will be optional for riders, providing an additional way to earn outside busy mealtimes.
