British consumer goods giant Unilever has said the spin-off of its ice cream business will complete Saturday after the record-long US government shutdown caused its delay.

The Magnum Ice Cream Company, which includes also the Ben & Jerry's brand, had been on track to begin operating by mid-November.

However the government shutdown, as Republicans and Democrats failed to agree on budget measures, meant a New York listing could not be approved.

Unilever said in a short statement Friday that trading of the demerged group's shares would begin Monday in Amsterdam - its main listing - as well as in London and New York.

The US government shutdown lasted 43 days from October to mid-November, during which time hundreds of thousands of workers went without pay.

For weeks, Republicans and Democrats failed to come together over healthcare subsidies.

That prevented the US Securities and Exchange Commission from allowing The Magnum Ice Cream Company to begin trading on Wall Street.

The demerger has occurred as Unilever undergoes a turnaround to boost performance.

The company has also cut jobs and earlier this year brought in new chief executive Fernando Fernandez.
