A new retailer-built wholesale venture has entered the market, as the Singh family, behind one of the UK’s most decorated independent convenience stores, formally unveiled SV Wholesale, a business shaped by three generations of frontline retail experience.
As shared by retailer-cum-wholesaler Amrit Singh, the story begins in 1991 when the family’s grandfather, a first-generation immigrant from Punjab, purchased a small convenience store after years working in local foundries.
Alongside his son, he spent the following decade establishing and expanding the business through hard work and long hours. After his passing in the late 1990s, the responsibility fell to the next generation.
Singh’s parents continued to grow the operation over the next 30 years, doubling the store by acquiring neighbouring premises and later buying out a local competitor in 2014, firmly cementing the shop’s reputation as a go-to destination in its community.
By 2016–17, the third generation stepped into the business with a renewed focus on digital growth and innovation. The store rapidly built a strong online identity, amassing more than 100,000 followers, going viral multiple times and attracting high-profile attention from brands and influencers.
TikTok videos by Greggs, KSI and Young Chip helped propel the store into national visibility as a trend-spotting, fast-moving retailer that consistently connected with younger audiences.
Major industry accolades followed, with the business securing honours including Spirit of the Community Award at Asian Trader Awards 2022.
But as the business evolved, the family identified a gap in the market which was the need for a wholesale supplier who genuinely understood independent retailers from the inside. According to Singh, the demands of trend-driven buying, rapid product cycles and operational pressures are too often overlooked by traditional wholesalers.
This realisation led to the creation of SV Wholesale, a new wholesale entrant positioned as “built by retailers, for retailers.” The company aims to combine lived retail experience with agile sourcing, digital fluency and a faster understanding of what today’s customers want.
More details on product lines and nationwide rollout are expected to follow.
