The latest figures published by the Scottish Government show that shop theft has once again increased in 2026, while assaults reported under the Protection of Workers (Retail) Act 2021 reach a new total of 11,794 (to June 26).
Shoplifting in the year ending June 2026 increased by 20 per cent compared to the previous year (from 47,381 to 56,920 crimes), marking an increase of 129 per cent from the year ending June 2022 (from 24,877 to 56,920 crimes).
Official statistics from earlier in the year also show that shoplifting in Scotland has increased for five consecutive years and is now at the highest level since 1971.
“SGF welcomes the Scottish Government’s commitment to continue funding the Scottish Retail Crime Taskforce for at least the next three years," said Dr Pete Cheema OBE, Scottish Grocers' Federation CEO.
“However, while the Taskforce has made progress in improving reporting and communication, retailers across Scotland continue to face record levels of escalating crime, including organised theft, violent attacks, and a growing surge in Illicit Trade.
“It’s simply unacceptable that retailers and staff are forced to go to work and face regular threats to their safety and wellbeing.
“That is why the Taskforce must only be the first step. Ministers must also act to tackle the court backlog and ensure offenders are brought to justice swiftly and effectively.”
