Retailers Urged to Register as Fuel Finder Scheme Opens

Forecourt retailers are being urged to act now and register their forecourt sites for the Fuel Finder Scheme, as registration is now officially open since Monday (Jan 5) after a delay of over two weeks.

Fuel Finder is a new government service that helps drivers find the cheapest fuel near them. It makes fuel prices available to third party apps and websites so motorists can easily compare prices.

The Fuel Finder Scheme will require retailers to report fuel price changes within 30 minutes and provide details on eight facilities and amenities, including Adblue pumps, Adblue packaged, LPG pumps, car washes, air pumps, water filling, 24-hour fuel, and customer toilets.

As per the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, retailers who run a petrol station of any size in the UK, operate a chain or franchise, manage unmanned or automated stations, sell fuel as part of another business (for example, a garage) or are a multi-site operator need to register under this scheme. Each site must be individually registered and compliant.

Those exempted are retailers who only sell fuel business-to-business, sell fuel in jerry cans, only sell red diesel for agricultural use or operate HGV depot sales based on pre-arranged logistics ("bunkers").

The department has confirmed that mandatory reporting will commence as planned on 2 February 2026. Retailers should register all forecourt sites they manage as soon as possible to ensure compliance with the scheme.

The department has published detailed guidance on how to use Fuel Finder, including:

  • What you’ll need to sign up.
  • How to register and update forecourt information.
  • How to report fuel prices.

Retailers can access the registration page here and view the full guidance here.

Although mandatory reporting date is mentioned as Feb 2, delays are being expected again as the whole process also includes a letter being sent to the retailers that will contain an activation code.

Only after they receive the code will retailers be able to verify and activate their account. Then, post that step, they can continue to register with Fuel Finder and begin price reporting on 2 February.
