Motor Fuel Group has introduced Plug & Charge technology across 95 per cent of its MFG EV Power charging network in partnership with Octopus Electroverse, enabling compatible electric vehicles to begin charging automatically when plugged in.
The move removes the need for drivers to use RFID cards, apps or contactless payment methods to initiate charging sessions, with authentication and payment handled automatically through an associated Electroverse account.
Plug & Charge uses an encrypted connection between compatible vehicles and charging stations to securely authorise charging. The technology requires both vehicles and chargers to meet specific technical and certification standards before they can support the feature.
MFG said the rollout forms part of its wider investment in simplifying the EV charging experience and supporting the transition to electric vehicles.
“By enabling Plug & Charge across almost our entire network, we’re removing frustrating inefficiencies and delivering the seamless, reliable charging experience our customers deserve,” Martin Symes, EV director at MFG, said.
“This is another major step in our ongoing investment to support the UK’s shift to electric vehicles, making MFG the first major UK network to deliver this game-changing convenience at scale.”
The development comes as forecourt operators continue to expand EV infrastructure. Last month, Certas Energy, which owns the Gulf UK and Pace brands, announced the launch of its electric vehicle charging offer, Evolo Rapid Charge, marking the company’s move into the fast-growing EV infrastructure space.
The rollouts come against a backdrop of accelerating EV adoption, with electric cars accounting for 23.4 per cent of new UK registrations in 2025, according to Zapmap data.
