Pilgrim’s Europe has agreed to acquire premium pork producer Walkers Deli & Sausage from Samworth Brothers, in a deal that will expand its presence in the UK value-added pork market.
The proposed acquisition, announced today (17 August), is subject to approval by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and employee consultation.
Walkers Deli & Sausage, which has a heritage dating back to 1824, employs around 1,150 people at its Leicester operation. The business supplies leading UK retailers and specialises in premium own-label food production.
Its portfolio includes premium sausages, sliced cooked meats, cooked bacon, snacking products and pâté.
Pilgrim’s Europe said the acquisition would strengthen its position in the UK food industry, expand its presence in premium pork categories and enhance its UK manufacturing footprint.
The two businesses already have an established supply relationship, which Pilgrim’s Europe said would provide a foundation for the integration of Walkers Deli & Sausage into its operations.
Ivan Siqueira, president of Pilgrim’s Europe, said: “Walkers Deli & Sausage is a fantastic business with a proud heritage, a highly skilled team and a strong reputation for quality and innovation.
“This acquisition is a natural strategic fit for Pilgrim’s Europe. We already have a well-established supply relationship with Walkers Deli & Sausage and see significant opportunities to build on the strengths of both businesses.”
He added that the acquisition would strengthen Pilgrim’s integrated supply chain and its ability to serve customers across the UK.
For Samworth Brothers, the sale will allow the group to concentrate investment on its Food to Go, Savoury Pastry and Meals operations, alongside its portfolio of brands.
Samworth Brothers chief executive Simon Wookey said Walkers Deli & Sausage was “an outstanding business” that had made a significant contribution to the group.
“As the protein sector has become increasingly specialised and integrated, we believe Walkers Deli & Sausage is well positioned for its next phase of growth as part of a business with protein at its core and expertise across the supply chain,” he said.
Wookey added that Samworth Brothers was “incredibly proud” of what the Walkers team had built and confident that the transaction would provide a strong platform for its future growth.
Following completion, the companies said the immediate priority would be supporting Walkers Deli & Sausage employees through the transition while maintaining service and product quality for customers.
