Fife-based allergen-free food brand Nakey Bakey is expanding across Scotland after securing a listing with Scotmid Co-op, supported by a £100,000 funding facility from Bank of Scotland.
Founded by entrepreneur Megan Murrie, the Glenrothes-based business was created after Murrie struggled to find food that met her dietary requirements while living with endometriosis and a nut allergy.
She began developing her own granola recipes at home, creating products that were naturally made, low in sugar and suitable for her dietary needs without compromising on taste.
The business has since grown into a dedicated production facility in Glenrothes, with a range of granolas and snacks that are free from all 14 major allergens, contain no added sugar, are naturally sweetened with fruit and are vegan-friendly.
Nakey Bakey's latest growth milestone came after it won Scotmid's Scottish Favourites competition, securing a listing across Scotmid Co-op stores in Scotland. Its products will be distributed through wholesaler J.W. Filshill, supporting the brand's expansion.
To help meet the increased demand, Nakey Bakey has secured a £100,000 invoice finance facility from Bank of Scotland. The funding will be used to invest in stock, increase production capacity and manage the longer payment terms associated with major retail contracts.
The company also plans to expand its workforce, with additional recruitment targeted by the end of 2026 as production increases.
Since rebranding in 2024, Nakey Bakey has won the Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards' Free From Product of the Year, the Scotland Start-Up Awards' Health & Wellbeing Start-Up of the Year and a Great Taste Award for its Mixed Berry Granola. It has also achieved SALSA food safety accreditation and received recognition through two parliamentary motions.
Sustainability is another focus for the business, which has developed an ESG strategy covering responsible sourcing, recyclable packaging and waste reduction. It is also working towards B Corp certification by the end of 2027.
Over the next five years, Nakey Bakey aims to become a leading UK allergen-free food brand, expanding beyond granola into new categories and exploring international export opportunities.
Murrie said: “What began as a personal solution quickly became something much bigger, showing me that many others were looking for the same thing.
“Securing our first major retail listing in Scotmid Co-op stores is a huge milestone for Nakey Bakey. It's incredibly rewarding to see something that started in my kitchen now on supermarket shelves and the support from Bank of Scotland has given me the confidence and funding to take those next steps and this really is just the beginning for Nakey Bakey.”
Steven Anderson, relationship manager at Bank of Scotland, said: “Megan has built an impressive business by turning personal experience into a product range that meets growing consumer demand. Nakey Bakey's expansion is a testament to that entrepreneurial vision, and we're pleased to be supporting the business as it scales and pursues its next stage of growth.”
