Just Eat is expanding its autonomous grocery delivery trial with Starship Technologies to Cambourne in Cambridgeshire, with Morrisons becoming the latest major retailer to use the technology to reach customers.

The launch brings robot delivery to more than 12,000 Cambourne residents and marks the first location in the Just Eat trial where the platform did not already have a grocery delivery service.

Orders from the Morrisons Cambourne supermarket will be delivered exclusively by Starship's autonomous robots, giving customers access to thousands of products including everyday essentials, fresh food and last-minute meal options.

Just Eat said the technology is intended to complement rather than replace its courier network, with the company testing whether autonomous delivery can expand access to delivery and create additional opportunities for customers and retail partners.

Morrisons is now operating autonomous delivery from four stores through the Just Eat partnership, as the Cambourne supermarket joins three Morrisons Daily stores in Sunderland and Milton Keynes.

Just Eat said demand in Sunderland and Milton Keynes had helped drive the expansion, with the robots also providing additional delivery capacity ahead of the Christmas period.

The robots are designed for smaller top-up shops, with an average midweek order of around 12 items. Across Morrisons' existing robot deliveries, cucumbers, chicken, milk and eggs are currently among the most popular products.

The launch also coincides with Just Eat's regular Half Price Wednesdays promotion, with Morrisons products available at 50 per cent off on qualifying items.

Charlotte Exell, group online director at Morrisons, said the trial marked the first time the retailer had offered Just Eat delivery from its Cambourne supermarket.

“Shoppers ordering from our Cambourne store via the app will have their orders delivered exclusively by robot,” she said.

From Co-op to Just Eat and Uber Eats

The move is another step in the expansion of Starship's UK retail delivery network.

Starship first entered the UK grocery market through its partnership with Co-op, launching autonomous grocery delivery in Milton Keynes in 2018 and expanding to Northampton in 2020. Co-op subsequently expanded the partnership to further towns and cities.

Starship has also been broadening its relationships with major delivery platforms. It launched a Just Eat pilot in Sunderland in February this year, initially offering robot delivery from 12 takeaway partners to more than 11,000 households.

In November 2025, Starship and Uber Eats announced a global partnership, with autonomous deliveries launching in the UK before expanding into other European markets.

Starship's robots use AI to navigate independently, avoid obstacles and make delivery decisions in real time. The company has over 2,700 robots operating across 270 locations in eight countries around the world, and in the UK, the robots serve customers in Leeds, Wakefield, Greater Manchester, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes.

The expansion comes as autonomous delivery technology takes on new forms, with Evri recently launching Europe's first trial of a two-legged autonomous delivery robot in Barnsley. The robot can carry parcels weighing up to 15kg and navigate obstacles including stairs and uneven surfaces.
