Morrisons has appointed long-serving executive Maz Ahmed as managing director of its convenience and wholesale division, as the supermarket accelerates plans to expand its Morrisons Daily franchise network.

Ahmed, who has been in the role since the spring, will lead the further growth of Morrisons' convenience business, which the retailer describes as a key part of its long-term growth strategy. The company plans to add hundreds more franchise stores in the coming years, while also improving the performance of its company-owned Morrisons Daily estate.

Reporting directly to chief executive Rami Baitiéh, Ahmed brings more than 18 years of experience with Morrisons, having joined the retailer in 2008.

He has spent much of his career in commercial finance, most recently serving as group commercial finance director, and has also held operational leadership roles. During a three-year stint as operations director at Myton, Morrisons' food manufacturing business, he oversaw the group's produce and horticulture operations.

Commenting on the appointment, Rami Baitiéh said: “Maz has demonstrated strong leadership skills in his previous roles and is already bringing new focus and drive to the management of our Convenience operations. I look forward to his further contribution to the development of this important business.”
