Marks & Spencer is ramping up its store renewal and expansion programme with plans to open 37 new or upgraded sites this financial year, including 12 new food halls and nine extended stores, in a £300 million investment push.

The retailer’s latest announcement marks a significant acceleration in its store rotation strategy, following news in May that it would open a dozen food stores on former Homebase sites across England.

As part of this year’s rollout, M&S will open 16 brand-new stores, including 12 food-only outlets, two full-line stores and two outlets. These will feature the retailer’s latest design format, with bright entrances, wider aisles, and modernised fixtures aimed at enhancing the customer experience and showcasing ranges from fresh produce to Dine In meals.

Among the upcoming locations are new food halls in Bell Green Sydenham, Abingdon, Cannock and Farnham, as well as the previously announced full-line stores at Bath Southgate and Bristol Cabot Circus. In addition to new stores, M&S plans to extend nine and renew 12 existing sites.

This expansion is part of a broader push by M&S to reshape its owned estate. Over the past year, it has signed 47 deals for new or renewed stores – more than in the previous three years combined – and is actively evaluating over 300 potential sites nationwide, from Elgin in Scotland to Exeter in the South West.

“We have a rigorous strategy to make sure we have the right stores in the right places, and this year we will deliver 37 new and renewed stores with the best of our Food, Fashion and Home and Beauty to our 32 million customers,” Stuart Machin, chief executive of M&S, said.
