Lidl GB is expanding the trial of its Lidl & Go self-scanning service to a further 37 stores across the UK after receiving positive feedback from customers during its initial pilot.
The retailer said the phased rollout throughout July will bring the smartphone-based self-scanning feature to stores across Scotland, the South East and the wider South of England, taking the total number of trial locations to 44.
Integrated into the Lidl Plus app, Lidl & Go allows shoppers to scan products with their own smartphones as they shop, monitor their spending and savings in real time, and complete their purchases more quickly at checkout without using dedicated in-store scanning devices.
Lidl said feedback from the initial seven-store trial showed the feature was particularly popular with customers shopping with children and those wanting greater flexibility while keeping track of their spending.
Louise Weise, chief customer officer at Lidl GB, said the early response had been "really encouraging".
"Customers are telling us they value the control and visibility it gives them over their spend, and the flexibility to shop at their own pace. This next wave of stores brings the feature to many more customers, and we'll continue to take on board feedback to evolve the offering as we go," Weise said.
The expansion forms part of Lidl GB's wider investment in digital services designed to make shopping easier and more flexible while continuing to offer traditional payment methods and staffed checkouts.
The retailer said it has increased investment in personalised coupons available through the Lidl Plus app by 60 per cent this year. It also launched Lidl Points in May, giving customers a more flexible rewards programme.
