Lidl GB is expanding its ‘Lidl & Go’ self-scanning trial to seven more stores as the discounter steps up investment in digital shopping technology.
The move will allow customers to scan products as they shop using the Lidl Plus app, track their spending in real time and complete purchases without going through a traditional checkout.
The latest phase of the trial follows a friends-and-family pilot launched across three stores last year. The expanded rollout will now cover stores in Airdrie, Cardiff, Epsom, Glenrothes, Kingston, Guildford and Eastleigh.
Lidl said the wider trial would help the retailer gather further insights to refine the experience ahead of any potential broader rollout.
Louise Weise, Chief Customer Officer, at Lidl GB, said the initiative marked “another step forward” in the retailer’s digital development.
“This trial is another step forward in our digital evolution, giving shoppers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop,” she said.
“As we continue to invest in Lidl Plus, our focus remains on making the shopping experience simple and rewarding. Whether a customer chooses a traditional checkout, self-service, or the autonomy of self-scanning, our priority is ensuring they have the flexibility to shop on their own terms.”
The expansion comes shortly after Lidl introduced Lidl Plus Points, a new feature within its loyalty app designed to give shoppers more flexibility in how they earn and redeem rewards.
The retailer said its continued investment in digital infrastructure is aimed at helping customers save money and shop more conveniently, while maintaining traditional payment methods and staffed checkouts for shoppers who prefer them.
