For Hamza Hussain, independent retail is both a family inheritance and a platform for what comes next. As managing director of Abu Bakr Supermarkets in Batley, Hussain represents a new generation taking the family business forward while bringing his own approach to leadership, customer service and growth.

The Batley store is an established, community-focused convenience business in the heart of Batley, West Yorkshire. Serving a diverse local population, it has built its reputation around quality, value and customer service, with a range spanning fresh produce, world foods, halal meat, groceries and everyday essentials.

The store places particular emphasis on fresh and culturally relevant products, alongside organised aisles and a clean, welcoming environment.

Growing up within the family operation gave Hussain hands-on exposure to the different sides of retail, from customer service and stock management through to leadership and business growth. Taking on responsibility early has, he says, developed his confidence, resilience and decision-making skills while giving him the drive to innovate and improve.

That balance between traditional retail values and a modern approach is central to his vision. Customer service has been a particular focus, with the business reporting increased repeat business and average spend. Greater attention to stock management has helped reduce waste while keeping high-demand products available, while in-store initiatives have been used to drive footfall and revenue.

The ambitions extend well beyond the Batley store. Abu Bakr Supermarkets is now in a position to open six to seven new stores, with further expansion planned. For Hussain, that growth is evidence not only of the strength of the wider business but also of the contribution he has made as the next generation steps further into leadership.

Yet expansion has not come at the expense of the local connection. Hussain describes the business as focused on strong community engagement, with initiatives including “Aisles of Support” and the provision of fresh fruit for children. The emphasis remains on creating a friendly and approachable environment in which customers feel understood and valued.

There is a personal dimension to that community focus, too. Hussain is preparing to run 16 miles to raise money for The Forget Me Not Hospice, reflecting his desire to give something back beyond the day-to-day running of the business.
