US food delivery giant DoorDash has partnered with OpenAI to integrate grocery shopping directly into ChatGPT.
Earlier this year, DoorDash has acquired UK delivery firm Deliveroo, though the new service is currently available only in the US.
Under the partnership, users can turn recipe ideas generated in ChatGPT into shoppable grocery baskets via a new DoorDash app embedded within the chat interface. The service allows customers to build a cart from recipe ingredients and place an order for delivery from local stores, in some cases within an hour.
The integration is designed to meet consumers at the point of inspiration, as growing numbers turn to AI tools to plan meals and discover recipes. By linking ChatGPT’s search and recommendation capabilities with DoorDash’s on-demand logistics network, the companies aim to remove friction from the grocery journey, including writing shopping lists and making store visits.
“AI is unlocking an entirely new search and discovery experience for consumers that’s dynamic and personalised,” Andy Fang, co-founder of DoorDash, said.
“We're thrilled to partner with OpenAI to create a seamless experience that allows users to quickly order ingredients for any recipe and check out directly on DoorDash. As we expand this experience to more shopping categories, our focus is on building AI tools that give people time back and make local shopping easier.”
Nick Turley, VP and head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, added: “[This] is another step toward bringing our vision to life – where AI connects directly to real-world services, saving people time and effort in their everyday lives.”
How the integration works
Users can enable DoorDash within their ChatGPT account settings, then ask the chatbot for meal or recipe ideas. Once a recipe is selected, ChatGPT can generate a shoppable list of ingredients through DoorDash, allowing customers to review their basket and complete checkout in the DoorDash app.
The feature is currently available to select users and is expected to roll out more widely across iOS, Android, desktop and mobile web in the coming weeks.
Although the initial rollout is focused on the US, DoorDash’s ownership of Deliveroo brings added relevance for the UK market, signalling how similar AI-led commerce tools could shape future grocery and convenience delivery models closer to home.
DoorDash says the integration enables local grocers to reach customers at the precise moment they are deciding what to cook, turning searches such as “easy dinner ideas” or “baking ingredients” into immediate purchasing opportunities through conversational AI.
DoorDash has also indicated plans to expand the ChatGPT integration beyond groceries into additional local retail categories.
