Damm UK has agreed to acquire the Old Speckled Hen family of beer brands from Greene King in a deal that will see production eventually move to the Eagle Brewery in Bedford.
The acquisition includes Old Speckled Hen, Old Golden Hen, Old Crafty Hen, Old Master Hen and Low Alcohol Old Speckled Hen.
During the transition period, the beers will continue to be brewed at Greene King’s Westgate Brewery to ensure continuity of supply and consistency of quality, before brewing transfers to Damm’s Bedford site.
The deal marks another major investment in the UK market by Barcelona-based family brewer S.A. Damm, owner of the Estrella Damm brand, following its acquisition of the Eagle Brewery in 2022.
Luke White, managing director of Damm UK, described Old Speckled Hen as “an iconic British ale brand with a rich heritage and loyal following”.
“We are proud that Greene King has chosen Damm UK to take the brand forward into its next chapter,” he said.
“The brand not only complements the current portfolio range by adding another category to our offering but it also reconnects the Damm Eagle Brewery to its historic British beer and ale production roots.”
Greene King acquired Old Speckled Hen from Morland in 1999 and has developed it into one of the UK’s best-known premium ale brands.
Nick Mackenzie, chief executive of Greene King, said the company was pleased to have secured a partner that would continue brewing the beers in the UK.
“We look forward to working closely in partnership with Damm and seeing Old Speckled Hen’s future success under their ownership,” he said.
Damm said the acquisition aligns with its long-term focus on brewing excellence and brand stewardship as the company celebrates its 150th anniversary year.
Following completion of the purchase, the Old Speckled Hen brands will continue to be available in the off-trade, as well as Greene King’s network of pubs.
