NFRN has urged the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to look into the “legitimate complaints” regarding pricing and availability during the coronavirus outbreak.
In a letter to the competition regulator, the federation’s national president Stuart Reddish sought an immediate meeting to discuss the issue, saying that it is “most important” for small retailers to secure supplies, and to do so at the best prices possible.
The CMA should “insist upon proper proportionality in supplies (based upon past annualised consumption patterns) between multiples, C&Cs and direct supplies to retailers,” he wrote.
Independent retailers and wholesalers have accused major suppliers of giving priority to the multiple supermarkets and restricting supply in the convenience channel in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reddish has also asked the watchdog to direct suppliers and manufacturers to accept offers made by small retailers to share deliveries with local multiples when staff shortages affect their ability to deliver.
