CMA to probe Danone’s acquisition of Harrogate Water Brands

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) today said it has decided to investigate the proposed acquisition of British water brand Harrogate Spring Water by Danone.

CMA has invited comments on the deal announced in February by which the French multinational would acquire a majority stake in Harrogate Water through a UK subsidiary.

Harrogate Water is among the oldest bottled water brands in Britain with a spa history dating back to 1571 and first being bottled in 1740. The current owners, the Cain family, is expected to remain as minority shareholders post the acquisition.

Danone, home to iconic brands like evian and Volvic, hopes to further develop Danone Waters’ position in the UK and support future growth for the Harrogate Water portfolio, which has a strong foothold in foodservice and on-the go sectors.
