Charlie Faulkiner, a highly respected figure in Scotland’s retail and wholesale sector and former CEO of Co-op’s wholesale operations, has died.
The Scottish Grocers’ Federation (SGF) paid tribute to Faulkiner, describing him as a “highly respected and much-valued” member of the industry whose career spanned several decades.
A Blantyre native, Faulkiner began his career in a local Co-op retail shop before moving to the Titwood Road Dairy, which served as the headquarters of the organisation’s wholesale operations. He subsequently held senior leadership positions and became CEO at the Co-op’s head office in Morrison Street, Edinburgh, where he spent many years.
Faulkiner later joined Wiseman, taking on a senior role overseeing its retail sector operations, before retiring around 10 years ago.
Away from the industry, Faulkiner remained closely connected to his local community and lived in Hamilton. He was a former member of Blantyre Round Table and supported Maggie’s, the cancer care charity.
He was married to Eleanor for more than 50 years and is survived by his wife, son Scott and granddaughter Emilia.
SGF chief executive Pete Cheema said Faulkiner was admired for his professional achievements as well as his personal qualities.
“Charlie was admired not only for his professional achievements but also for his integrity, kindness, and unwavering support of colleagues and friends across the industry,” he said.
“Those who had the privilege of working with him will remember his wisdom, humility, and commitment to helping others succeed.”
Cheema said Faulkiner’s contribution to the industry had been “immense” and that his legacy would be remembered by the wider retail community.
He also paid tribute to Faulkiner’s commitment to his local community and charitable causes, extending SGF’s condolences to Eleanor, Scott, Emilia and the wider family and friends.
“Charlie’s contribution to our industry was immense, and his legacy will long be remembered,” Cheema said. “May he rest in peace.”
