Arvind Bachubhai Sedani, one of the family members behind the growth of London-based Asian supermarket chain Quality Foods, has died aged 73.

Sedani passed away peacefully on Thursday (October 15), his family said.

Born in Luanda (Kisumu), Kenya, on November 22, 1952, he was a key part of the family business that grew from a single Indian grocery shop into a major South Asian supermarket retailer in the UK.

Quality Foods was established in 1981 when Piyush Sedani opened a shop selling Indian groceries in Upton Park, with support from his brothers Arvind and Vipul. The business expanded over the following decades, developing a wider grocery offering to serve London’s diverse communities.

By 1992, Quality Foods had established itself as a recognised brand. In 2006, the business further expanded its operations, developing what became one of London’s largest South Asian supermarket operations.

The retailer now operates stores in Hounslow, Hayes, Ilford and Southall, alongside an online grocery business serving customers across the UK. Its range spans Indian and wider Asian groceries, as well as Afro-Caribbean, Middle Eastern and other international foods.

Quality Foods’ Hayes store was a finalist in the World Food Retailer Award category at the 2025 Asian Trader Awards.

The business also developed its own Gulab brand, strengthening its presence in the Asian grocery market.

Beyond his contribution to the family business, Arvind Sedani was remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and as a “pillar of his family and community.”

“Arvind bhai will be remembered for his extraordinary kindness, generosity and selfless dedication to helping others. He touched countless lives and leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, compassion and service,” the family said in a statement.

He is survived by his wife, Harsha; his children, Tina and Shyam; and his seven grandchildren, Amari, Anaiya, Ivanna, Shaylan, Dylan, Leilani and Saavan.
