A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a stabbing at a convenience store in Lundwood, Barnsley.

South Yorkshire Police said the 26-year-old suspect, from Barnsley, was detained on Saturday (9 May) after a man suffered serious injuries during a suspected robbery at the Todays Express store on Pontefract Road on Thursday evening (7 May).

Officers were called to the scene at 8.50pm, where the 40-year-old victim was found with life-threatening injuries. Police said his condition has since stabilised in hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles said officers and detectives had been “working day and night” on the investigation to trace the suspect, establish the sequence of events and reassure the local community.

“The man we have arrested remains in custody for questioning,” Knowles said. “Our enquiries continue and I’d like to thank all members of the public who have contacted us so far with information.”

Police conducted high-visibility patrols in Lundwood over the weekend to answer questions from the local community.

The investigation remains ongoing.
