Kalpesh (Pete) Patel, of Zola Ltd trading as Costcutter in Purfleet, Essex, has been named Symbol Retailer of the Year at the Asian Trader Awards 2026 held in London on Wednesday (Nov 4).
The award recognises the way Patel has used symbol-group support while retaining the independence to shape a store around its customers. The Costcutter partnership provides access to buying, promotions and established retail systems, while the business’s local ownership allows it to respond to the needs of its catchment.
Patel’s nomination highlights the importance of combining a strong everyday convenience offer with clear merchandising and customer-focused ranging. The store’s presentation, availability and promotional activity are central to making the most of the symbol proposition and encouraging repeat visits.
The Costcutter fascia is part of a broader independent retail landscape in which symbol membership can help smaller operators compete through buying power and support, without losing the local knowledge and decision-making that distinguish independent stores.
The recognition places Patel among the retailers demonstrating how a close working relationship with a symbol group can support a distinctive, commercially focused convenience business in its local market.
Asian Trader Awards 2026, held at Westminster Park Plaza Hotel in London, recognised the achievements of independent retailers and businesses from across the country, shining a spotlight on the innovation, enterprise, resilience and community spirit that continue to define the sector.
The evening was hosted by actor Nitin Chandra Ganatra. Minister for Artificial Intelligence The Rt Hon Kanishka Narayan MP graced the occasion as the chief guest.
