Attempted burglary at Warwickshire newsagent running for 31 years

An attempted burglary happened at newsagent operating in Warwickshire for 31 years. 

According to local reports, couple Inderjit and Amrik Padda have been selling newspapers from Padda News to a Nuneaton community for decades and have been constants in the Stockingford community. 

The store had an uneventful run through decades but last week, it came to end when the store was broken-in during the early hours of Friday (4). The family, living upstairs heard the alarm go-off and called the police immediately.  

Three police cars attended the scene responding to the call. While extensive damage was caused to the inside and outside of the building, nothing had been stolen.  

A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attempted break-in and is currently in police custody.  

“They’ve had a good go at it, breaking through the glass and the shutter door, then they’ve tried to break through the cigarette gantry too. Somehow, they’ve managed to get out without cutting themselves. 

“It was a bit of a shock as it’s the first time in 31 years, nearly 32, we’ve had anything like this happen,” local reports quoted Inderjit as saying.  

“As soon as people heard about it or saw the damage, they’ve been really nice. One person brought us a bunch of flowers. We’re just waiting for forensics to come and then work will begin to replace what was broken.” 

Padda News still opened on Friday morning to ensure newspaper deliveries could be completed to the community.
