Morrisons under fire over hefty-priced pumpkins

Shoppers are blasting supermarket Morrisons over hefty-priced pumpkins as Halloween approaches.

According to Manchester Evening News, the supermarket has been charging significantly more for its ‘giant’ pumpkins than its counterparts, with largest ones priced at £8.99 price tag. Its other varieties range from 99p to £2.99 and are currently available across 100 stores.

The pumpkins in question were said to be only slightly larger than Sainsbury’s ‘monster’ ones, which cost £3 each. The picture of Morrisons’ heavily-priced pumpkin was shared in a Facebook group where users took a jab at the pricing.

“Wow! They’re so cheap elsewhere so that’s got to be an error,” one commented while other said “That’s crazy they were no more than 3 quid last year for a massive one.”

According to the publication, at other stores, the cost of pumpkin didn’t differ too much – ranging from £2.85 to £3 at four of them – Aldi, Asda, Lidl and Sainsbury’s. Tesco was the cheapest at £1.75, but it only had a large, rather than extra-large, so it was smaller than the rest, stated the report.

This is not the first time Morrisons’ price hikes have drawn criticism from shoppers. The MEN’s weekly price comparison of basic food groceries, like milk and bread, has seen the supermarket rank highest for prices for months. The supermarket was accused of “laughing at customers” with the spike.

“Our giant pumpkins are a larger alternative to our standard large pumpkin and remain a popular choice for customers,” a Morrisons spokesperson said. “However we do offer a range of cheaper alternatives to suit, with our munchkin pumpkin costing as little as 59p and our large pumpkin at just £1.99.”
