Carte D’Or to save over 900 tonnes of virgin plastic a year

Unilever dessert brand Carte D’Or has transitioned its entire range from plastic tubs to responsibly sourced, recyclable paper tubs and lids.

Set to save over 900 tonnes of virgin plastic in the UK annually, the packaging move from Carte D’Or will see the brand use 93 per cent less plastic per tub. The new paper packaging material is PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified from sustainably managed forests and controlled sources. With plastic waste being the number one environmental concern for British shoppers, the switch will appeal to the growing number of shoppers seeking more sustainable products.

Now in a responsibly sourced, recyclable paper tub, Carte D’Or has also revitalised the packaging design, giving it a refreshed look and feel for standout in the freezer. The new packs include a QR code which will direct shoppers to a website where they can learn where Carte D’Or’s key ingredients come from, their flavour credentials and more about the brand’s commitment to sustainable sourcing.

“For over 40 years, Carte D’Or has been committed to crafting delicious desserts made with some of the finest quality ingredients, which we strive to source in a sustainable way,” said Horacio Cal, Ice Cream Marketing Director Unilever UK&I. “Now, we’re proud to have made this move to paper tubs, saving over 900 tonnes of virgin plastic in the UK every year and helping shoppers to reduce their plastic packaging footprint at home.“

Carte D’Or has a longstanding commitment to source Rainforest Alliance Certified Vanilla and Cocoa for its ice creams and the brand’s Vanilla for Change programme – in partnership with Wall’s, leading vanilla supplier Symrise and Save the Children – aims to support the vanilla farming communities in the SAVA region of Madagascar through a range of community initiatives, whilst securing a sustainable source of vanilla.
