    Scarborough shop granted alcohol licence

A shop in Scarborough has been granted a licence to sell alcohol after a hearing was held following objections raised by local residents.

Mayuran Shanmugathasan applied to Scarborough Council to allow his Eyres Convenience Store in Scalby Road to sell alcohol from 9am until 10pm seven days a week.

The application went before the council’s licensing sub-committee on Monday after five residents objected to the plans.

The residents feared that as the store currently closes at 6pm that anti-social behaviour in the area would increase and last later into the night.

One of those residents, Fiona Bennett also told councillors that vehicles and deliveries to the shop regularly parked on the double yellow lines and on the pavement which caused obstructions.

Jonathan Davey, the council’s legal advisor, said that it was not Shanmugathasan’s responsibility to enforce traffic laws.

Robert Jordan, who was acting for Shanmugathasan said that despite the residents’ fears about the impact on crime and disorder it was important to note that North Yorkshire Police had not objected to the application.

Jordan added that Shanmugathasan had a number of years experience in running stores and for the last four years had been operating one in Walthamstow in London.

The sub-committee granted the licence as requested.
