Wholesale and convenience industry’s charity bike ride moves to the UK

The annual Wholesale & Convenience Industry Charity Bike Ride in support of MAG (Mines Advisory Group) will take place this year across eight locations in the UK, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, on eight dates in June and July.

The annual ride launched in 2015 has so far raised £673,000 for MAG– the Manchester based humanitarian, landmine clearance charity.

“We would normally have travelled to south east Asia in February to ride in a part of the world seriously affected by landmines and unexploded bombs, but obviously this year we are unable to this due to the global pandemic. We have therefore decided to move the ride to the UK in 2021, across eight dates and locations in June and July,” Neil Turton, managing director of Sugro and co-founder of the charity ride, said.

“The switch to UK rides in 2021 means more people in the industry can join us this year as we have up to 150 places available,” Turton added.

The rides will take place on 24th June – Newcastle, 25th June – Glasgow, 01st July – Bristol, 02nd July – South Wale, 07th July – Midlands, 09th July – London, 15th July – Yorkshire and 16th July – Manchester.

People can sign up for just one ride, or any number of rides. Participants will need to provide their own bike, water bottle and crash helmet.

The price per ride is £295 (with a commitment to raise another £100 in sponsorship).

Tom Fender, development director of TWC and co-founder of the ride, said he hopes employers will cover the costs for some of their team to participate. “We want to make this the most inclusive charity event in the UK wholesale sector.”

Since 2015, 75 UK wholesale, convenience retail, FMCG and service-provider executives have gone on five bike rides for MAG in Sri Lanka, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. The 2021 event was originally scheduled for Zimbabwe.
