A Weston-super-Mare vape shop that “deliberately flouted” the coronavirus lockdown has been forced to close.

North Somerset Council officers served a prohibition notice on Friday (3 April) on the business, which has not been named.

The shop had continued its retail activities and was actively encouraging customer visits through Facebook messages.

It will be required to close until the government lifts the restrictions on non-essential shops.

Deputy leader Mike Bell, whose executive portfolio includes trading standards, said: “To reduce social contact, the government has ordered certain businesses and venues to close.

“The action taken by our officers today sends a very clear message that we will not tolerate deliberate flouting of the rules which puts the lives of others in danger.

“Delivery services through telephone or online retail can still operate and are encouraged.

“I also appreciate that this is a worrying time for businesses – but there is a lot of financial assistance on offer and I would encourage everyone to check out the help available.”
