14 people have been arrested in the last two months in a major crackdown on shoplifting by the Wakefield North East and Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT).

The officers targeted offenders shoplifting in the towns of Normanton and Featherstone.

Four persons, three men and one woman, have been sentenced and charges were framed against eight others, including one woman. A 19 year old man was given an adult conditional caution and a 41 year old woman, an adult community resolution.

Inspector Sohail Mohammed of the NPT said: “Shoplifting is not a victimless crime, it is a crime that affects retailer and the general public. Shoplifting represents a huge cost to retailers, and inevitably, to society as a whole.

“We will continue to tackle these types of crime, and work effectively with businesses and partners to combat them. That includes dealing robustly with any abuse or violence offered to employees. Retailers have kept the country going and provided a valuable service to us all during unprecedented times.”

Inspector Mohammed added that the images of shoplifting suspects are regularly uploaded to the Caught on Camera section of the forces’ website, urging the public to contact the police if they recognise persons on the website.
