Waitrose has on Wednesday unveiled plans for its first distribution centre in the South West, marking a significant step in the retailer’s long-term supply chain transformation.
The new site, located in Avonmouth, Bristol, will be operated by logistics company DHL and is set to open in early 2027. It forms a key part of Waitrose’s multi-year £1 billion investment programme aimed at modernising operations across the business and supporting its ambition to become the number one destination for food lovers.
Central to the strategy is a more agile, technology-led supply chain. Waitrose said it has invested in market-leading systems, including AI-driven customer demand forecasting, to build on its product availability while reducing manual processes for colleagues.
The Avonmouth site is expected to play a critical role in delivering faster, more reliable replenishment to the retailer’s 50 existing shops in the region, as well as underpinning future store growth.
The distribution centre will also strengthen Waitrose’s regional footprint in and around Bristol, where the retailer opened a new shop at The Arches last autumn and has confirmed plans for a full-line supermarket at the Brabazon development.
“As we grow, it’s essential that our supply chain grows with us. This new site strengthens our network, ensuring consistent service for our customers and creating over 550 jobs in a state-of-the-art facility,” Alison Maffin, Supply Chain Director at Waitrose, said.
Sustainability is another cornerstone of the project. The building has been designed to BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ standards and features a roof fitted with 1,200 solar panels, energy-efficient systems, extensive natural light, landscaped gardens and a roof terrace.
Waitrose estimates the site will reduce annual mileage across its supply chain by 2,225 tonnes of CO₂ a year – equivalent to removing more than 1,500 vehicles from the road – with vehicles refuelling at the biomethane facility opposite the warehouse.
Recruitment for the site, including 480 warehouse staff and 80 drivers, is due to begin this spring.
