Magnum multipacks have been shrunk by Unilever in a bid to mitigate surging costs of raw material, stated a recent report, highlighting how the ice cream brand’s 110ml sticks will now be made to 100ml to be sold in 4x100ml multipacks.
The shrink is expected to affect flavours including classic, white chocolate, almond, caramel and mint.
“We regularly review our product sizes and pricing, and we are committed to ensuring shoppers enjoy great value for money from our brands,” reports quoted Unilever’s spokesperson as saying.
They added that Unilever was “currently experiencing large increases in the costs of some of our raw materials including some of the high-quality ingredients in Magnum.”
“When this happens, we will always try to absorb as much of the cost pressures ourselves before increasing our prices.
“The retail price of our products is always at the sole discretion of the retailer and we, like all manufacturers, only provide a recommended retail price.”
The report comes as the country witnesses a 40-years-high inflation rate. According to Office for National Statistics data released today (20), annual consumer price inflation rose in June to 9.4 percent, the highest since February 1982,up from May’s 9.1 percent and above the 9.3 per cent consensus in a Reuters poll of economists.
The ONS pointed to a 42 per cent year-on-year rise in petrol prices and an almost 10 per cent increase in food prices as the main drivers of inflation last month, a hammer blow for families on low incomes.
