A pair of Yorkshire supermarkets were targeted in a suspected ‘ram raid’ while a burnt out van was found abandoned close to the scene.
According to local reports, Spar in Brotton, near Whitby, and the Co-op in Loftus were the ones that were targeted on Sunday (25) around 11 am.
After the incident, a cordon was erected and a crime scene investigation van remained parked outside both of the damaged entrances. Glass was found scattered across the entrances next to piles of rubble.
A burnt-out van was also spotted beside a cattle arch a few minutes from the Spar – just off Coach Road. It is currently unknown whether the vehicle was involved in two incidents, or whether they are linked.
Repair works are already underway at the Co-op, with teams putting up a wooden panel at the impact site, reported Teesside Live.
Many passers-by and some nearby residents of the Loftus store said they did not see or hear anything. One resident said he heard something around 9pm but doesn’t know the exact time.
One Brotton resident told said that she heard the revving of engines around 7.30am, when it was “still half-light.”
“I heard engines revving – and more than one. I heard this big bang and it wasn’t normal. And then another one straight after. It’s a bit scary,” reports quoted her as saying.
