Supermarkets have kicked off an intense round of pre-Black Friday Champagne discounting, rolling out deep cuts across both branded and own-label lines of champagne as the race for festive alcohol spend accelerates.
ASDA fired the starting gun, slashing prices on major houses including Taittinger and Lanson, and stacking these reductions with its 25 per cent off six-bottle deal.
Taittinger Brut Réserve has dropped to £34 (down £8.98), while Lanson Le Black Création is now £30 (down £12.97). ASDA’s cheapest current own-label, Henry Cachet Brut, is priced at £15.44, dropping to £11.58 with the six-bottle deal.
Premium lines, such as Bollinger Special Cuvée and Moët Grand Vintage, have also been pulled into the promotion .
Sainsbury’s, which has leaned heavily on Nectar card-driven alcohol promotions this year, quickly moved to match and deepen its Champagne cuts following ASDA’s move.
According to a media report, the supermarket nearly matched ASDA’s Lanson pricing at £31 a bottle and levelled with £45 for Bollinger.
Among its lower-priced options, the retailer has Pol Guyot and new line Carre Perseval. Sainsbury’s own Charles Dauteil Vintage is also at reduced price.
Tesco has also rolled out its buy-six-save-25 per cent Clubcard deal, with around a dozen lines currently qualifying for dual discounts. The grocer matches both Sainsbury’s and ASDA with Moët Grand Vintage at £55 and Bollinger at £45.
The three major supermarkets are now firmly locked into a Champagne price war as they vie for share of the high-spend festive alcohol market.
This follows a period of declining champagne sales in the UK and rising prices for many bottles, a trend blamed on the cost of living, changing consumer tastes, and the popularity of cheaper sparkling wine alternatives like prosecco.
