A shopkeeper in South Gloucestershire has been the victim of a religiously aggravated assault after his turban was knocked from his head during an incident at a convenience store, prompting a police appeal for information.
Avon and Somerset Police said the attack took place at around 4.30pm on Sunday 19 April on Filton Avenue, where two men entered the store and an altercation occurred with the retailer.
Officers have released CCTV images of two individuals they would like to speak to as part of their investigation.
According to the force, one of the men is described as white, in his early 20s, with short curly black hair, wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts and black and white trainers. The second is also described as white, in his early 20s, with short brown hair, wearing a grey tracksuit and black trainers.
House-to-house enquiries, CCTV reviews and intelligence checks have been carried out, and officers remain in contact with the victim, who has been offered access to specialist support services.
Neighbourhood Inspector Barny Mabbett described the incident as “appalling” and said it had caused “great distress” to the shopkeeper.
“We are treating this as a religiously aggravated assault. There is no place for hate in communities across Avon and Somerset, and we want to assure residents we take incidents like this incredibly seriously,” he said.
Police have increased high-visibility patrols in the area following the incident and are urging anyone with information, including dashcam or doorbell footage from before or after the assault, to come forward.
They can contact police by calling 101 and quoting reference number 5226076399, or by completing the force’s online appeals form. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or using its online reporting form.
Crimestoppers does not take personal details, and information cannot be traced or recorded, meaning those who come forward will not be required to attend court or speak directly to police.
