An Edinburgh convenience store has highlighted growing concerns over retail crime after a series of alleged theft incidents left staff feeling increasingly vulnerable and frustrated.

A Nisa Local store in Marchmont has been repeatedly targeted by shoplifters in recent weeks, with thieves allegedly stealing high-value items ranging from premium dairy products to confectionery and meat.

One incident on June 6 involved a man allegedly stealing multiple packs of Lurpak butter. The situation escalated when an employee attempted to recover the stolen goods, resulting in a confrontation that was captured on CCTV.

Store manager Dharani Myneni told a local media outlet that persistent thefts are taking a financial and emotional toll on the business, while also raising concerns about employee safety.

"Staff feel helpless when it comes to confronting thieves," Myneni said. "If we try to stop them, they can become aggressive. It's not fair because we are losing money, but as a small business we can't afford to employ security guards."

Myneni noted that thefts are often focused on premium products rather than everyday essentials.

"They tend to target expensive items such as American confectionery, cheese and steak. It's rarely the cheaper products," she said.

Fellow employee Sai, who has worked at the store for two years, said theft has become an increasingly unpredictable part of the job.

"I only feel unsafe when I confront them," he said. "There needs to be more support for smaller shops and businesses."

The store has panic alarms installed beneath its tills, with staff reporting that police generally respond quickly when incidents occur.

Police Scotland confirmed that officers received a report of theft and a disturbance at premises on Marchmont Road at around 5.55pm on 6 June. Enquiries remain ongoing.

The incident comes amid continued concern across the convenience sector over rising levels of shop theft and abuse against retail workers, with retailers increasingly calling for stronger measures to protect staff and tackle repeat offenders.
