A Greater Manchester retailer has reopened his family convenience store on what would have been his late wife Nila Patel’s birthday, fulfilling a vision the couple had worked on together before her sudden death earlier this year.
Suresh Patel on May 28 officially reopened the refurbished store as One Stop Nells, a tribute to Nila, who passed away in February at the age of 45 after suffering a brain aneurysm.
The relaunch marks the completion of a project that Nila had passionately championed, centred on creating a stronger community-focused store and finding the right symbol group partner to help bring that vision to life.
Speaking to Asian Trader, Suresh said the couple had long planned to transform the business.
“When we bought this store, it was already trading under Booker,” he explained. “Sometime down the line, Nila and I decided to improve our store and also find the right franchise partners.”
As part of their search, the couple sought advice from retailer Priyesh Vekaria, who already operated under the One Stop brand in Greater Manchester.
“Priyesh, who was already trading under One Stop, explained everything to us very well and put us in the right direction with the One Stop team,” Suresh said.
The pair also visited several other One Stop stores before making their decision.
“One Stop team visited us, understood our vision and did everything they had to do. It was Nila’s idea to run the store as a community store; she believed One Stop was the right symbol group that could deliver what she actually wanted," he said.
The refurbishment was originally scheduled to begin in April. However, those plans were overshadowed by tragedy following Nila’s sudden passing in February.
Despite the devastating loss, Suresh decided to continue with the project as a way of honouring her ambitions for the business and the community she loved.
“Despite the loss, we had to come back and keep her dreams alive,” he said. “I approached my shopfitters. They were very professional. They worked along with the One Stop team and delivered everything exactly as we wanted.
"I am quite happy with what they've done. Our shoppers are also very happy.”
For many local residents, the store has long been more than a place to shop. Under Nila’s leadership, it became a hub for community support and charitable initiatives, from providing free fruit to schoolchildren to fundraising for local causes and supporting people experiencing homelessness.
Announcing the launch on social media, Suresh described the occasion as about far more than a store opening.
“Today is more than just the opening of a store,” he wrote. “Today is about remembering Nell.
“After an emotional journey, we are proud to officially open the doors to the new One Stop Nells, not simply as a convenience store, but as a place built on community, connection and continuing a legacy.”
Opening the store on Nila’s birthday, he invited customers and friends to be part of the next chapter.
“Because this was never just about opening a shop. It was always about people.”
