Actor Nitin Ganatra OBE of EastEnders fame has paid an emotional tribute to his brother and sister-in-law as their long-running family convenience store in Coventry closed over the weekend after serving the community for more than five decades.

The long-standing family-run convenience store in Coventry closed its doors on Saturday (May 9), marking the end of an era for generations of shoppers who relied on the business not just for groceries and newspapers, but also companionship and everyday support.

Charlie Ganatra and and his wife Smitty, owners of Ganatra's News on Hollyfast Road in Coventry, are now set to retire. The couple took over the business in 1972, continuing the legacy established by Nitin and Charlie’s parents, and have since become a familiar and trusted presence within the neighbourhood.

Reflecting on their decision to retire, Nitin said that the store closure seems like an "end of an era".

Nitin shared with Asian Trade,. "I've been up there and customers have been queuing up to see them and say goodbye. The stories have been unbelievable. The tears from old and young have been overwhelming.

"I'm going back again on Monday to help them move. The impact my brother and bhabi have had on the community over 54 yrs has been profound.

"Lots to say about small businesses and community. The customers all have some stories about my family.

"Been very emotional. They all came out into the streets to pay respect to my mum and dads funerals," the actor recalled.

Over the last few days, customers visited the store to share memories and say goodbye.

The closure reflects the wider challenges facing many independent convenience retailers across the UK, where long-serving family businesses continue to play a vital social role within local communities while also navigating rising operating costs and changing shopping habits.

Although stepping away from retail, the couple said they intend to remain active in retirement, with plans including visiting India for the first time in 25 years and spending more time with family and grandchildren.
