News UK is set to increase the carriage charge for its Direct to Retail operation inside the M25.

The 1.75 percent rise will take effect from 3 February.

Responding to the announcement, NFRN has raised concerns on the impact of the move on the retailers as well as the category itself.

“There is already clear evidence of retailers departing the category and this latest – and very unwelcome – carriage charge increase will only exacerbate this situation, but somehow News UK is happy to turn a blind eye to the effect it is going to have,” said Stuart Reddish, national president of the federation.

He added: “It is ludicrous this dual distribution in London continues. Besides further deepening the hole in our members’ pockets, News UK is doing nothing to address its so called responsibilities around the ozone layer.”
