A Newcastle city centre shopkeeper has been given a licence to sell alcohol after a war of words with another local businessman.

Raj Nahal, of Martin’s News on Grainger Street, was given a licence to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises between 9am and 11pm every day, from the store which he has re-opened under the ‘best-one’ brand.

However, at last week’s meeting of the council’s licensing sub committee, Neraj Bedi, manager of the nearby Londis Metro Express, objected to the application claiming that under-age youngsters were being sold cigarettes and alcohol from the rival store.

Bedi claimed that people refused tobacco or alcohol at his shop for having incorrect or no ID would go to Best One and get served there without challenge.

Nahal strenuously denied the allegations and paid tribute to his staff saying they are “highly trained good human beings.”

However, the committee decided to give the plans the go-ahead, pointing out that Northumbria Police haven’t raised any objections.

A written decision published by Newcastle Council stated that an “administrative error” resulted in the original premises licence not being transferred to the new owner.

It said: “Martins Newsagents was previously held by Admore Limited, until that company went into liquidation.

“As a result of an administrative error, the premises licence was not transferred within the prescribed time limit and lapsed.

“This application is for the same licence as was granted in 2017 and the detailed conditions reflect what was previously agreed with the Responsible Authorities.”
