A Leicester store was left with significant damage in the early hours of Thursday morning after thieves used a vehicle to smash their way in and steal a cash machine, Leicestershire Police confirmed.

The incident occurred shortly after 3:30am near the junction of Stoughton Road in the Knighton area. According to police reports, a Mitsubishi Shogun was driven into the front of the store to gain access to the ATM. The vehicle was later found abandoned on nearby Elmsleigh Avenue.

Authorities believe multiple suspects were involved in the well-planned heist. The group is thought to have fled the scene in a separate vehicle, described as a grey car. It is not yet known how much cash, if any, was inside the stolen machine.

Detective Sergeant Robert Smith of Leicestershire Police said the investigation remains active. “While it happened in the early hours, the shop is on a main route in and out of the city and there may have been people in the area. I’m keen to speak to anyone who saw either vehicle beforehand and particularly anyone who captured something of note on a dashcam,” he said.
