JDM Distributors, Watford, London-based importer of American products, has issued a precautionary recall for Jif Creamy Peanut Butter and Jif Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter over possible salmonella contamination.

The move follows the recall in the US by manufacturer JM Smucker Co of select Jif peanut butter products.

The affected products in the UK are:

    Jif Creamy Peanut Butter

    • Pack size: 453g
    • Batch code: 1343006
    • Best before: 09 December 2023

    Jif Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter

    • Pack size: 453g
    • Batch code: 1296425
    • Best before: 23 October 2023

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause symptoms including diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps in humans, and is one of the most common food-borne infections. It can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

The Food Standards Agency has advised consumers not to eat the products from the affected batches.

Point of sale notices will be displayed in retail stores that are selling these products, and shoppers who have bought the above products can return them to the store for a full refund.

Following the recall by JM Smucker Co on May 20, several food companies across the US have recalled products made with Jif, including Fresh Del Monte and Cargill.

As of Thursday (May 26), 14 salmonella cases have been reported in 12 US states, with two people hospitalised. However, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the true number of illnesses is probably higher.

Last month, Italian confectionery giant Ferrero has recalled its Kinder chocolates after products made at the factory in Arlon, southeastern Belgium, were found to contain salmonella, resulting in 150 cases in nine European countries.

More than 3,000 tonnes of Kinder products have been withdrawn from the market.
