An iron bar-wielding robber has raided a Birmingham convenience store before making his escape.

The robbery took place at the One Stop shop in Rectory Road in Sutton Coldfield on Friday (May 30).

A man with an iron bar threatened staff, forcing them to open the till.

He stole cash at around 6.30pm and then fled the scene.

A spokesperson for One Stop told local media outlet, “We are aware of the incident that occurred at our Rectory Road, Sutton Coldfield store on Friday evening.

“No colleagues or customers were hurt and we are continuing to help the police with their enquiries.”

West Midlands Police has appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

A spokesman for the force said, “We were called to reports of a robbery at a shop on Rectory Road, Sutton shortly before 6.30pm on Friday 30 May.

“Staff at the shop were threatened by a man with an iron bar, who stole cash from the tills before escaping. No one was injured, and our investigation is ongoing."

Meanwhile in Oxford, a man has been remanded in custody after pleading guilty to stealing multiple bottles of wine from a convenience store.

Stuart Gordon of Luther Street, Oxford, pleaded guilty at Oxford Magistrates' Court on Monday (June 2) to stealing three bottles of wine totalling £18 from the Co-op on Walton Street last month.

The court heard that the 52-year-old left the store "without making any attempts to pay" on the evening of May 20 and was subsequently arrested by Thames Valley Police.

The court heard that less than a week earlier on May 14, Gordon had been given a 12 month community service order, a Drug Rehabilitation Requirement - a court-ordered programme comprising structured treatment and regular drug testing - and a three month curfew.

The court heard that Gordon had breached the curfew 'multiple times', which the 52-year-old denies.

Judge Rana did not grant Gordon bail and remanded him in custody until his next court hearing due to the risk of him 'committing further offences' while on bail, which she said 'is supported by your previous record'.

He will next appear in court at 10am on Tuesday, June 10.
