Leading Glasgow-based convenience retailer Shahid “Mo” Razzaq has been appointed as the new chair of the Finance and Corporate Resources Committee at South Lanarkshire Council, highlighting the increasingly prominent role independent retailers are playing within their local communities beyond the shop floor.
Razzaq’s appointment comes following the sad passing of Councillor Lesley McDonald.
Sharing the news on May 27, Razzaq said he was “honoured” to be nominated for the role, which also includes first option to chair the Appeals Panel and the Grievance and Disputes Panel.
“This nomination follows the sad passing of Cllr Lesley McDonald, who served in this role with great professionalism and commitment, supported by co-vice chairs Cllr Walter Brogan and Cllr Celine Handibode,” he stated.
“Lesley’s contribution to this committee was outstanding, and I am keenly aware of the responsibility that comes with following in her footsteps.
“I do not take this position lightly. I will work diligently, act with integrity, and do my utmost to uphold the high standards that have been set before me. Thank you to all colleagues for their trust and support.”
Razzaq is a well-known figure in the convenience retail sector and owner of Premier Mo’s in Blantyre, a store recognised for its innovation-led approach. Over the years, the business has introduced several sector-first initiatives, including a dessert bar, home delivery services, DRS machines and 24-hour vending facilities.
His latest appointment also reflects the evolving role of convenience retailers as influential voices within their neighbourhoods, increasingly contributing not just to local economies but also to civic leadership and community development.
The appointment follows a growing trend of convenience retailers stepping into civic and community leadership roles. Just last month, West Yorkshire retailer Bobby Singh, owner of BB Superstore, was appointed Vice Chairman of the government-backed Pride in Place programme in Pontefract, urging fellow store owners to “take it a step further” in supporting their communities.
